Gladys Simmons Obituary

Gladys Olivia Montgomery Simmons was born in Beatrice, Alabama on July 27, 1940 to the late Hosea Montgomery, Sr. and Florence Robbins. She received her heavenly wings on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro, South Carolina.  Home-Going Celebration will be held Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 329 Savage Street, Reverend Wayne G. Carter, Pastor and Eulogist.  Interment, Heavenly Rest Memorial Garden.  A public viewing will be held Friday, January 24, 2020 at the Stephens-Maree-Tracy Funeral Home Chapel of Serenity from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Gladys accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her health failed. She loved her church and loved talking about the Lord no matter when you went to visit her and enjoyed serving the Lord. It did not matter whether you called or visited, she would always tell you things that you would never in a million years think about. Whenever you left from visiting, her favorite saying was, "Drive Safe and don't forget to Pray." To know her was to love her.

She was employed at Walterboro Dress Factory for forty years. She was an awesome seamstress; her passion was sewing. She would sit and sew for hours and hours doing what she loved. She used her sewing machine to help clothe the family and anyone else that was in need.

She was joined in holy matrimony to Tommy James Simmons on October 7, 1967.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Florence Montgomery Bartley; her son, Tony Leroy Montgomery and grandson, O'Brian Bartley.

Her memories will forever be cherished by her husband, Tommy James Simmons; two sons, Melvin Montgomery of Walterboro, SC and Timmy (Anitra) Simmons of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Indiar (Daron) Gardner of Atlanta, GA, Jerell Bartley of Summerville, SC, O'Brian Montgomery of Walterboro, SC, Trevor Simmons of North Carolina, Savion Gardner of Atlanta, GA, Marvin (Christina) Boatwright of Walterboro, SC, Antonio (Chanda) Boatwright of Virginia; five great-grandchildren, Orianna Bartley, Dashia Bartley, Malik Boatwright, Connor Boatwright, and  Antwan Boatwright; five sisters, Dorothy Montgomery of Walterboro, SC, Deloris Montgomery of Augusta, GA, Sarah Nettles of Moss Point, MS, Barbara Watts of New Haven, CT, and  Glencile Greenlea of Montgomery, AL; seven brothers, Edward Montgomery of Moss Point, MS, Willie Montgomery of Garden Grove, CA, Larry Montgomery, Gregory (Doris) Montgomery, Hozell (Sylvia) Montgomery, all of Beatrice, AL, Elijah (Mary) Hale of Shreveport, LA, and  Howard (Johnnie Mae) Hale of Frisco City, AL; one sister-in-law, Mamie Lynah of Cottageville, SC; one aunt, Clara Williams of Walterboro, SC; eldest living cousin on her father's side, Ms. Arie Montgomery Nettles of Pensacola, FL; a special niece, Christine Lynah Golden of Cottageville, SC and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
