Agnes Elizabeth Dubois Bright, affectionately known as “Liz” was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, was born in Padgetts, South Carolina on May 26, 1935 to the late Swinton Dubois and Gladys Cooper Cummings. She peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at the age of eighty-nine.
Agnes was educated in the Colleton County School System and graduated from Colleton Training School. She attended Claflin University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She taught in both the public and private schools of Colleton County. She was fondly loved and respected by her students.
Agnes was a member of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Incorporated. She was initiated into Gamma Nu Chapter at Claflin College in 1958. She was also a charter member of the Xi Omega Omega Graduate Chapter in Walterboro, South Carolina.
Agnes married her high school sweetheart, Harry Hopkins Bright, in 1959. They had four daughters. Bonnie Aletha, Marsha Elizabeth, Harriet Cynthia, and Gladys McKinley.
Agnes was a member of Isaiah United Methodist Church where she worked diligently in different capacities. She was Past President of the United Methodist Women, Past PPRC Chairperson, the Nominating Committee, Treasurer of the United Methodist Women and a member of the choir. She had several other duties in the church. Agnes loved the Lord and enjoyed attending church and Sunday School until her health started to decline.
Agnes is preceded in death by her parents, Swinton Dubois and Gladys Cooper Cummings and her daughter, Bonnie Aletha Bright.
Agnes is survived by her devoted husband of sixty-five years, Harry Hopkins Bright; her children, Marsha E. Clyburn (Kenneth), Harriet C. Barrett (Robert), Gladys M. Lisbon (Peter); four granddaughters (Kristen Clyburn, Candance Barrett, Kourtney Barrett, Bianca Epps, and one great-grandson, Kingston Barrett-Reedy; one brother, Central Pete Williams (Bernetha); one brother-in-law, Douglas Bright; lifelong friend/cousin/sister, Lizzie Kinloch; God daughter, Karen Kinloch; special nephews, Chester Bright, Bruce Grant, Anderson Grant, Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
