Alfred Chisom, Sr. Obituary

Alfred Chisom Sr., affectionately known as “Ting,” the son of the late Loulla Mae Johnson Chisom and Herbert Chisom, was born on November 8, 1954, in Colleton County. He passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Roper St. Francis Hospital in West Ashley.

He was married to Hattie Lee Chisom, the daughter of the late Earnest Mosley Jr. and Mary Mosley.

In his youth, he was a member of Lovely Hill Baptist Church with his father, Herbert Chisom. Later, he joined Bethel United Methodist Church with his mother, Loulla Mae Chisom.

He was loved and respected by many. He always made sure everyone around him was taken care of. To his daughters, he was affectionately known as “Iron Man” because he could bounce back from any challenge. At work, he was affectionately known as “The Master.”

Alfred received his education at the former “Smoaks Middle School” in Smoaks, South Carolina.

He was a skilled brick mason, learning the trade alongside his father, Herbert Chisom, and brother, Oscar Chisom, at Meeks Construction. Later, he worked for his brother, Oscar “Pop” Chisom, at Chisom Construction and also collaborated with his nephew, Bernie Williams, at Williams Construction. Ting was deeply committed to uplifting and building up his family. 

Alfred, a man of many passions, enjoyed fishing, crabbing, dancing, and playing checkers, where he still holds the undefeated record. He cherished his time with his grandchildren, whom he called his heart strings, including Katia Gaines, Leila Gaines, Aziah Gaines, Aalam Gaines, and Adaya Gaines whom he lived in the home with.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Loulla Mae Chisom; his brother, Johnny Chisom; a sister, Mary Jane William; his grandson, Adam Gaines IV; and a Aunt,  Matt Lee Chisom.

Alfred leaves behind his beloved wife, Hattie Lee Chisom and children: Daughters Betty (Michael) Stephens of Smoaks SC, Kemberly (Minister RaSean) Simmons Summerville SC, Angela (Damian) Vincent of Warner Robins Georgia , LaShawn (Adam) Gaines of Summerville SC and one Son Alfred (Darlene) Chisom Jr. of Walterboro SC. four brothers: Robert (Lucia) Chisom of Smoaks SC, Oscar (Eartha) Chisom Columbia SC, Joseph (Hattie Rachel) Chisom of Smoaks SC, and Herbert (Sylvia) Chisom of Summerville, SC. His first cousin/brother, Bishop Anthony Chisom of Delaware, Four sisters-in-law, Norma Chisom of Walterboro SC and Jeanette and DoAnn Mosley both of Smoaks SC and Eloise Mosley of Rowesville SC. He has 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, as well two devoted nieces, Kim Brown and Tamika Mosley, and one devoted nephew, Willie Mosley Jr. A numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
