Beatrice Sylvia Hodges, 91, peacefully transitioned in Richmond, Virginia, born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York. She was the beloved daughter of Ethel Hayes and Thomas Harris, both of whom preceded her in death. After losing her mother as an infant, she was lovingly raised by her devoted aunts, Corneila Campbell and Mary Thompson — an experience that shaped her independence, strength, and resilience.
A proud graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Brooklyn New York, Class of 1953. Beatrice later earned her Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from New York City Community College, 1980, at the age of 40. She worked for AT&T for 16 years before serving with the Board of Education until her retirement in 1999.
In 1960, she married Roosevelt Hodges. They shared 48 years of marriage until his passing in 2008. With grace and strength, she lived 18 years beyond her beloved husband, carrying his memory in her heart.
A lifelong woman of faith, she was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Community Baptist Church, Brooklyn New York, and later served faithfully at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Brooklyn New York. She was also a proud member of the Fraternal Order of the Eastern Star, Brooklyn New York chapter. Spicy, resilient, outspoken, and stylish, Beatrice was a true overcomer. She loved dressing beautifully, wearing her jewelry, and enjoying trips to the casino.
She leaves to cherish her loving children: Diahann Hodges, Roosevelt Hodges Jr., and Rodney Hodges; her step-son Terry Hodges; her daughter-in-law Pansy Hodges; grandchildren Desiree Samuels and Briana Hodges; step-grandchildren Tedra Singleton, Terry Jr. (Chucky) Hodges, and Latoya Hodges; nieces, nephews, and a host of family, friends, and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her brother Thomas (Sonny) Harris Jr. and her sisters Marjorie White and Hortense Harris.
