Beverly Theresa Washington Carey Obituary

Beverly Theresa Washington Carey, affectionately known as “Bev”, was born on October 10, 1947 in the Catholic Hill Community of Walterboro, South Carolina to the late Catherine and Jessie Washington Sr.  Beverly entered into eternal rest on August 30, 2022  at Novant Health Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

She  was raised in the Catholic Faith and was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She  was educated in her early years at St. Joseph’s Catholic School. She attended Colleton High School in Colleton County and graduated in 1965.

Beverly relocated to Paterson, New Jersey and married the Love of her life, the Late Charlie “Peter” Carey Jr. on September 7, 1968.  To this union, three children were born.

Relocating to Paterson New Jersey allowed Beverly’s family to grow both  biologically with her husband Charlie, and through the special bond she formed with the Bryant, Blair, McElveen and Johnson families; brought on friendship and sisterhood that has lasted a lifetime.

She was employed in the Home Healthcare Industry until her health declined and then, she became a stay at home Mom. She lovingly, took care of her family and she often assisted her extended families with their children when they needed  the help. Whether it was picking up her extended nieces and nephews on an early dismissal day at school, or having them over to her home to play with her children on any given day.  Beverly took care of all the children in her life as if they were her own.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Sr. and Catherine Washington;  husband,  Charlie “Peter” Carey Jr.; son,  Charles Dwight “Chucky” Carey; brother,  Jessie Washington Jr.; sister,  Fannie “Kiki” Washington; and  sister at heart, Jeannette Perry.

She  leaves to cherish her memories, two daughters, Shonnette Carey-Laylor (Dougal) of Paterson, New Jersey and Theresa Carey of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; one grandson reared in the home, Zamir Carey of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; three granddaughters, Shania Laylor and Senora Laylor of Paterson, New Jersey and Kyri Alexander of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; three sisters,  Ernestine Worthern (Earnel) and Annette Washington both of Brooklyn, New York, and Brenda Washington of Walterboro, South Carolina (Catholic Hill Community); four brothers,  Theodore Moore of Bronx, New York, Eugene Washington, JFK Washington (Pony) and Monroe Washington (Mavis) of Walterboro, South Carolina (Catholic Hill Community); three sisters-in-law, Earldean Carey Powell of Greenpond, South Carolina, Linda Carey Harley (Roland) of St. Matthews, South Carolina, and Sandra Carey Perry of Baltimore, Maryland; three brothers-in-law,  Prentiss Carey (Norma) and Danny Carey (Sarah) of Greenpond, South Carolina and Harvey Williams of Walterboro, South Carolina (Catholic Hill Community); devoted friend and special little sister at heart,  Anne Bryant-McKenzie (Moses) of Paterson, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Beverly’s smiling face,  and one of a kind  tell it like it is personality,  will be sorely missed and never forgotten.
