Catherine Mack Obituary

Catherine Ann Mack, affectionately known as "Cat or Cathy," was born on May 1, 1953 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to the late Sadie Mae Mack Nance and James Fersner. God called Cathy home on May 28, 2020, where she passed away peacefully among family at home.

Graveside Service Will be held Friday, June 26, 2020 at Belleville Memorial Garden, 2900 Belleville Road, Orangeburg, South Carolina at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Dr. Ephriam D. Stephens, Eulogist.   A public viewing will be held the day of the service only.

She met the love of her life, Dennis Murray, and they remained life partners until his passing on April 26, 2020. This union lasted nearly fifty years, producing three children, Donte, Shiquan and De'Anah.

Cathy received her formal education in the Orangeburg School System, graduating from her beloved Orangeburg Wilkerson High School. She was a member of the Bull Swamp Baptist Church at an early age. She was an active member and part of the church choir under the late great, Reverend J.J. Glover. After graduation, she moved to Jersey City where she joined a new home of worship, Nazarene Temple (C.O.G.I.C.), under the late, Reverend Leroy Lawrence.

She was employed by the Visiting Homemaking Service for several years before taking a position at the Jersey City Board of Education. She worked there for 25 years until her declining health stunted her ability to work, thus bringing on her retirement.

Catherine was a shining light in a world that seemed to be full of clouds. Her smile was infectious. Her heart was full of compassion and her spirit couldn't be contained. She was known as everyone's other mother, favorite cousin, godmother, or BFF. Her door was always open to take in any "stray" as she lovingly referred to family and friends.

Catherine was preceded in death by her partner in life, Dennis Murray; parents, James Fersner and Sadie Mae Nance; siblings, Edward Leroy Mack, Linda Barbara Washington and Isaiah Mack; paternal grandparents, Henry David and Rosebud Fersner; maternal grandparents, Emma Mack, Edward Mack and Mary Bell Mack.

She leaves to cherish her beloved memory, three children, Donte Mack (Chrysis), Shiquan Mack (Tyquanna) and DeAnah Mack (James); three grandchildren, Shimir Mack, Naziyah Mack and Amir Mack; two sisters, Cheryl Fersner Kelly (Charles) of Orangeburg, South Carolina and Sharon Lockett (Carl) of Bayonne, New Jersey; one brother, Darrell Nance; one brother-in-law, Darrell Washington both of Jersey City, New Jersey; paternal uncle, Henry Fersner (Angelia); paternal aunts, Doris Fersner and Beverly F. Jones (Al); maternal uncles, Herbert Mack (Virginia), Johnny Mack (Loretta);  maternal aunts, Eartha and Mary Mack all of Orangeburg, South Carolina; one special favorite cousin, Evelyn Darby, with whom she shared a special bond, and in her words, "A sister that God gave me," Irene McKnight, and others that she called, "my other children" which are too many to name,  along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
