Deacon Alvin Murray, Sr. Obituary

Deacon Alvin Murray, Sr. was born to the late Harold and Sarah Murray on November 23, 1931.   He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 8, 2019.  Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Old Miss Cemetery, Smoaks , South Carolina at 3;30 p.m.  A public viewing will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m in the S-M-T Chapel of Serenity.  

 Deacon Murray was the third of twelve children. He attended the segregated Burney Street School in Madison, Georgia. At the age of 17, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia and from there to New York. He was married to Deaconess Rena Aiken-Murray. He was a self employed contractor (Top Job Decorators) and worked for the city of New York for many years. He joined New Mount Zion Baptist Church in 1949, the Sanctuary Choir in 1950 that was later called the Voices of Zion. He  graduated from the Baptist Educational Center in 1976. He organized the Ministry of Christian Education, the Youth Council, Floral and Hospitality Ministries, the New Member Class, and the Bible Verse Speaking Choir and the Zionares Singers . He served as Superintendent of Sunday School for over thirty years and ordained as a Deacon in 1998 and later became chairman of the Diaconate Ministry.

 He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Deaconess Rena Aiken-Murray; two children, Sharon Garden (Stanford) of Hinesville, GA, Alvin Jr. (Moneshia) of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren, Shunta, Semetra, Jamari, Alexix, & Alvin III; three great grands, DiJean, Ja'Corra & Naasson; four sisters, Mary Murray Herndon, Wauline Murray Baptiste, Doris Murray Booker all of Atlanta, GA and Brenda Murray Swint (Eugene) of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, Rosby Murray of Atlanta, GA and Floyd Murray (Shirley) of Park Forest, IL.; three sisters-in-law Laura Jones, Jessie Ellison, and Betty Murray; three God daughters, V. Denise Rhodes, Rev. Dr. Gail Badger, and Jacquelyn Leibert; one God son, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
