Elizabeth "Lizz" Carpenter Brunson

Elizabeth "Lizz" Carpenter Brunson was born on September 10, 1946 in Orangeburg, South Carolina to Leroy and Eartha (Fields) Hook. She entered into eternal rest on June 27, 2026 in Walterboro, South Carolina. Throughout her life, she carried herself with quiet faith and steadfast grace, leaving an enduring light in the hearts of all who knew her.

Lizz spent her early childhood in Orangeburg, South Carolina before moving to New York City in her elementary school years. She completed high school and went on to obtain her Associate Degree in Business from Medgar Evers College (Brooklyn, New York) in 1978. She was first married to Joseph Carpenter, Jr. a union through which she was blessed with her beloved children, Moneisha and Damon. She later married Clarence Brunson, Jr. and together they shared 43 years of love and companionship.

Over the years, Lizz built a steady and hardworking career across several fields. She began as a bank processor at Bank of New York, known for her careful attention and reliability. She later worked as a clerical analyst for Dun and Bradstreet after relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, offering her dependable spirit and sharp mind to every task. In time, Lizz obtained her Commercial Driver's License (CDL). She and Clarence then created their own business as independent truck drivers, sharing miles and enduring closeness. She completed her career years serving her community as a school bus driver for Colleton County School District, in Walterboro, South Carolina, carrying children safely with the same gentleness she carried at home. In each role, she brought quiet dedication, grace, and a heart committed to serving others. 

Her faith was the quiet hymn that moved through her days. As a member of New Life United Methodist Church, she studied with devotion, taking classes and preparing her spirit to serve as part of the Lay Servant Ministry. In that calling, she offered her hands to God with a grace that felt like prayer, and in the choir, she let her voice rise in worship, her song drifting heavenward and joining the sacred praise of her church family.

Lizz lived with an open hand and an open heart, giving more love than she ever asked for in return. She had a generosity that would soften any moment and a joy that would brighten any room. She was a woman who gave freely—her time, her laughter, her kindness—and the world is softer because she walked through it. We feel the ache of her absence, yet we also feel the warmth of her spirit still moving among us, reminding us to be kind, to laugh easily, and to love without hesitation. Even in our grief, we feel the echo of her joy, reminding us that love is meant to be shared generously and that kindness is a ministry all its own. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eartha Lee (Fields) Hook and Leroy Hook, whose memory remained a steady presence in her life.  

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted spouse, Clarence Brunson Jr., her children—Moneisha Carpenter of Georgia; Damon Carpenter (Jennifer) of New York; and Tremane Trerelle Brunson of South Carolina (by marriage). Her legacy lives on through her five beloved grandchildren: TJ Coller Carpenter, Cassaundra Carpenter, Lincoln Carpenter, MacKenzie Carpenter, and Camille Carpenter Henriquez. She is also remembered with love by her sister, Pearl M. Brown of Georgia; her brother, Curtis Lee Hook (Betty) of Florida; her sisters‑in‑law, Nancy Brunson of South Carolina, LaVerrne Brunson of Delaware, and Viola Brunson of Delaware; and her brother‑in‑law, John Brunson (Shay) of Delaware. She is further honored by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who carry her light forward.
