Ms. Ella Mae Stephens Williams, beloved daughter, sister, and mother, was born on October 14, 1952, in Smoaks, South Carolina. Ella was the cherished daughter of late British and Magalene Jenkins Stephens. She peacefully transitioned on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the age of 72, surrounded by family in the warmth of her home in Smoaks, South Carolina.
She pursued her education with dedication, graduating from Ruffin High School in 1970, before continuing her studies at Claflin University. Her commitment to learning led her to earn a Master of Education Degree from South Carolina State University, equipping her with the knowledge and passion to serve others throughout her career.
A lifelong member of Lovely Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Smoaks, South Carolina. Ms. Williams found joy in worship, uplifting souls through music as a member of the choir.
Ella was also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a sisterhood dedicated to public service and empowerment. She carried those values into her work at the Hampton County Department of Social Services, and the State of New Jersey Social Services where she devoted herself to helping families and individuals in need. Even after retirement, her spirit of service remained unwavering—she volunteered at Colleton Regional Medical Center and continued to support students as a substitute teacher in the Colleton County School District.
Ella had a deep love for cooking, finding joy in trying new recipes and inviting family and friends over to share them. She delighted in traveling and exploring new places, embracing every adventure with excitement. Shopping was one of her favorite pastimes, and she had an impeccable sense of style—truly, a fashionista who carried herself with grace and flair. She also found joy in exercising, valuing wellness and an active lifestyle that kept her energized and engaged in life.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Marcus Stephens, Willie Stephens, and Jacob Stephens; her sister, Virginia Salley; her sister-in-law, Adrienne Stephens; and her brothers-in-law, Leroy Sanders and James McFadden.
She is survived by her cherished son, Mr. British Steven (Jasmine) Williams of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Ms. Minnie M. Sanders of Burlington, New Jersey, and Ms. Roberta McFadden of Brooklyn, New York; a brother, Mr. Nathaniel (Brenda) Stephens of Smoaks, South Carolina; her brother-in-law, Mr. Joe Salley; two bonus children, Ms. Yolanda Stephens and Mr. Nathan Stephens; one aunt, Ms. Birdie Mae Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Special thanks to Minister Estell V. Brunson, Mr. Harry Williams, Mrs. Brenda Stephens, niece Yolanda, and nephew Nathan for their loyal support and special care. Her kindness, wisdom, and generosity touched countless lives. She leaves behind a legacy of love that will be cherished by family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
