Emerson Sinclair Stephens was born on October 12, 1928, to the late Kinlaw and Pearl Stephens of Islandton, South Carolina. He transitioned into eternal life on June 17, 2024, at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones.
Emerson’s educational journey began in Islandton, South Carolina and continued in Brooklyn, New York where he pursued his passion for becoming a Tool and Dye Specialist. His dedication and hard work led him to various machinist positions, culminating in his retirement. His expertise was recognized when he was ranked #1 in South Carolina as a Tool Dye Specialist, a role that allowed him to contribute to the NASA Space Shuttle program by making one of the gaskets.
He exemplified unwavering devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather, consistently providing for his family. His passions included fishing, gardening, hunting, and caring for his dogs. Additionally, he derived great joy from spending time with his grandchildren and actively contributing to the community’s welfare. His remarkable wit was also a defining attribute.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kinlaw, and mother, Pearl Stephens; two sisters, Janet Stephens and Porsha Marshall; one brother, Kinlaw David Stephens, Jr.; and two children, Natalie Lockhart and Barry Grier.
Emerson’s life and legacy are cherished by a large and loving family. He is survived by hisbrother Olin Stephens, Islandton, South Carolina : six sons, Kalvin E. (Thomasina) Stephens of Mount Poconos, Pennsylvania, Emerson S. (Amanda) Stephens of Waldorf, Maryland, Stanley Ellison of Brooklyn, New York, David L. (Arletha) Harris of Toney, Alabama, Nathaniel Harris of Fairfax, South Carolina, Cedric R. (Brenda) Stephens of Roanoke, Virginia; daughters, Isabelle Mortis of Clinton, Maryland, Cynthia (Jamie) Coaxum of Cottageville, South Carolina, Yolanda Duvernay of Walterboro, South Carolina, Tosha N. Stephens of Columbia, South Carolina, Crystal (Terrell) Harrison of Jacksonville, Florida, Cierra Allen of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Robin Washington of Walterboro, South Carolina; “Four generations of grandchildren.” Special and Friends neighbors, Ms. Dena Rose, and Mrs. Shirley.
In his final moments, he received dedicated care from his youngest daughter, Robin Washington, ensuring his peaceful transition. The entire family expresses profound gratitude for her unwavering commitment and affection toward our father.
