Ethel Dixon-Toney was born on September 19, 1944, in Woodrow, SC. Ethel was the daughter of the late Izaih Dixon and Coreen Johnson-Dixon. Ethel departed this life on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, after a brief illness at Prisma Health, Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC.
At the age of five, Ethel relocated to NJ and later graduated from Linden Highschool, class of 1962. Ethel then met and married the love of her life, James Toney, JR. The happy couple were married for 58 years until James death on March 8, 2021.
While living in NJ, Ethel worked as a Librarian at the Linden Public Library. Ethel also worked at several other companies – A&S, National State Bank, and the Teachers Federal Credit Union as a Head Teller in Roselle Park, NJ. Ethel also attended First Baptist Church in Linden, NJ and then joined Heard A.M.E in Roselle, NJ and was a part of the Emergency Choir and the South Carolina Club.
Ethel moved back to SC in 1994 and became employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Florance, SC, where she retired at the age of 62. Ethel was also an active member of New Zion A.M.E Church in Bishopville and was a part of numerous ministries.
Ethel loved sewing, cooking, and baking and was well-known for her pound cakes. Ethel also enjoyed being an Independent Jewelry Consultant for Paparazzi Accessories.
Ethel is survived by her children Nathaniel (Michelle) Toney, Sr. of Bishopville, SC; Yvette (Ronney) Jones of Darlington, SC; Anthony (grand dog Sasha) Toney of Avenel, NJ; God-Daughter Natasha (Todd) Johnson-Geter of Sumter, SC; three siblings Bennie Dixon of Linden, NJ; Cynthia (Wayne) Johnson of Sumter, SC; Robert Dixon of Linden, NJ; Cousin/Brother Marc Johnson of MD; 2 brothers-in-law Jobe (Willie Mae) Toney of Columbia, SC and Willie Lee Dowell of Bishopville, SC; 4 sisters-in-law Thelma Toney & Gloria Dixon of Roselle, NJ; Greta Mark of Sumter, SC; and Ada Trapp-Toney of Lynchburg, SC; 5 grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends whom she loved dearly
