A Time to be Born and a Time to Die

Henry “Candy Boy” Scriven, Sr., entered into eternal rest Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at the National Healthcare Facility in Sumter. Born in Sumter County, June 19, 1926, he was the son of the late Johnson Scriven and Fannie Davis Scriven.

A Time to be Educated

Henry was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.

A Time to Build Up

“Candy Boy”, as he was affectionately called, will be remembered for his strong sense of spirituality. His Christian walk with God began at St. Mark Four Bridges Baptist Church. He assisted on numerous ministries in the church until his health would not permit him to serve. Candy Boy said what he meant and meant what he said. He was a man with a strong conviction. His laughter was like a beam of light expressing joy. His caring and sharing with others will always be remembered by many.

A Time to Labor

Henry was an entrepreneur. He was the founder and owner of Scriven’s Concrete Finisher. He was known in Sumter and the surrounding counties as one of the best concrete finisher. Prior to starting his own business, he worked for Williams Furniture, Burgess-Brogdon and the Cement Man. He was dedicated to Scriven’s Funeral Home and assisted his nephew for many years.

A Time to Love

Henry married the love of his life, the late Mamie Lee Butler Scriven. From this union seven children were born. He not only cherished his Mamie, but loved and valued his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great, great grandchildren other relatives and friends. You could always tell when his children, grandchildren or sibling were in his presence; one would hear his joyous laughter. His favorite songs were “It Could Have Been Me” by the Five Blind Boys and “Amazing Grace.”

A Time to Celebrate

Henry “Candy Boy” Scriven, Sr. leaves to celebrate his memory and continue his legacy four daughters, Gloria Jean Scriven McFadden, Deborah Ann Scriven Brock, Sandra Arleen Scriven Lemon, and Pamela Darnell “Buffy” Scriven Weston; three sons, Henry “Ricky” Scriven, Jr., Anthony (Janis) Scriven, and Michael Kenny Scriven; Two grandchildren reared in the home, Tamika Scriven Goss and Takisha Lemon; one sister, Anna Green; special nephews, English (Christine)Scriven and Henry “Jackie”(Lynn) Scriven; adopted son, David(Terri) McDonald, thirteen grandchildren, twenty nine great grandchildren, ten great, great grandchildren; a special friend, Drefus Williams and a host of other relatives and friends.

“A special thank you to the staff and management of the National Healthcare Facility of Sumter who took very good care of our Dad.”
