James Taylor Penn, the eldest of five children of George Taylor Penn and Betty Mae Penn was born on October 14, 1938. He entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 9, 2020 at the Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, South Carolina. Home-Going Celebration will be held Saturday, March 14,2020 at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church, 735 Wesley Grove Road, Cottageville, South Carolina. Reverend Johnny Epps, Pastor, and Reverend Avery Penn, Eulogist. Interment, Church Cemetery. A Public viewing will be held Friday, March 13, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the Stephens-Maree-Tracy Funeral Home Chapel of Serenity.
He graduated from Carver High School in 1958, where he received four athletic letters in baseball, basketball and track.
In 1959, he was married to Ruth Bowles of Martinville, Virginia. To this union, four children were born.
He received an associate degree from Virginia State College in Virginia in Commercial Foods in 1960. Together they opened a restaurant until he discovered his true passion..."Diesel Mechanics." In 1975, he relocated to Maryland to pursue his passion. It was there, he met and married Alice Ford of Cottageville, South Carolina in 1981. To this union one son was born. He then began working for Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) as Diesel Mechanic working on buses, Peter Built Trucks and then to Western Diesel. He then worked for Peterpan Bus Lines in 1998 until his retirement in 2005. When his health began to fail, he relocated to South Carolina to be with his wife's family where he continued to enjoy watching boxing, game shows, westerns, and his beloved Dallas Cowboys.
He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy his wife, Alice; four sons, Jason, James, Jervis, and Jerome (Jacquelin); daughter, Jan (Robert); brother, Avery Penn (Violina); sister Margaret Caldwell; four brothers-in-law, Odell (Sylvia), Fred (Betty), Mack (Barbara) and Ernest (Jacquelyn); two sisters-in-law, Birtie (Tony) and Joyce and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
