Jennie Lou Brown, affectionately known as “Doot” was born on September 17, 1936, to the late Mr. John Henry Brown and Mrs. Julia Ann Linder Brown. She entered into eternal rest on January 11, 2025 in New York.
She grew up in the town of Smoaks, South Carolina and attended the Colleton County public schools. She was a lifetime member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She moved to Brooklyn, New York at the age of 17 and continued her walk with Christ at Behlin Holy Temple Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Pastor Jimmy Behling. Years later, she moved to the Bright Light Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. E.S. Daniels. She was president of the Willing
Workers Club, President of the South Carolina Club and Chair of the Kitchen Committee, where she served for over 50 years. When she could no longer attend church physically, she remained connected through the prayer line and virtual worship services.
For the last 10 years, she lived in Baltimore Maryland with her daughter. When she moved to New York, she began working in the fashion district as a seamstress and quickly moved up to floor lead in her department. She was also a caregiver to the elderly for numerous years. Later, her compassionate spirit led her to the housekeeping industry. She was dedicated to whatever she set her mind to do.
Doot was a spicy and direct individual who loved to cook, talk and play the slot machine at the Casino. Most of all, she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She also loved watching her favorite football team, the Baltimore Ravens.
She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, five sisters, Hattie Lou Chisolm, Daisy Canadys, Albertha Salley, Willie Mae Williams and Lillie Ruth Stokes; four brothers, Joseph, John Henry, Walter and Eddie Brown.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Sharon Brown Childs (Jeffrey), two grandsons: Ethan and Evan Childs of Baltimore, Maryland. One Sister-in-law, Albertha Brown of Smoaks, South Carolina, A host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
