Johnie "Humpback" Hunter was born on December 15, 1953 in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Wyatt and Mary Harris HunteJohnie departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at Prisma Health Tuomey, Sumter, South Carolina.
Graveside Service will be held Saturday, January 30, 2021 at St. Michael A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Wedgefield, South Carolina at 3:00 p.m., Reverend Dedra Howard, Eulogist. A public viewing will be held Friday, January 29, 2021 at Ephriam D. Stephens Funeral Home Chapel from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Johnie was a member of St. Michael A.M.E. Church in Wedgefield, South Carolina where he served as a trustee. He worked as a Cement Finisher for many companies over the years. Johnie was a self-employed Small Engine Mechanic until his health failed.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and wife.
Johnie leaves to cherish his memory, his companion, Mamie Gilbert; two children, Jonae Gathers of Philadelphia, PA and Jonathan Gilbert of Wedgefield, South Carolina; a stepdaughter, Tamika Gilbert of Wedgefield, South Carolina; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Jefferson and Sallie (Roosevelt) Issac both of Sumter, South Carolina; seven brothers, Wyatt (Joyce) Hunter of Washington, DC, James Hunter of Norfolk, VA, Gene Hunter of California, Robert Lee (Ernestine) Hunter, Keith Hunter, George (Deloris) Hunter and John Earl (Connie) Hunter all of Sumter, South Carolina; one uncle, Mack Hunter of New York; two aunts, Ella Bell Boykin of Camden, South Carolina and Margaret Jordan of Camden, New Jersey and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
