Marie Hutson Obituary

Marie K. Hutson, of Smoaks, South Carolina was born on April 14, 1935,  the third oldest daughter of her nineteen  siblings, to Ada Grimes Jordan and Timothy Jordan, Sr.  She passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Oaks of Orangeburg, Orangeburg, SouthCarolina.

She was born in Ruffin, South Carolina but later moved to Smoaks where she received her education. During her educational years, she loved to play basketball. She would often reminisce to her loved ones on how the other teams would get intimidated when they saw "the skinny girl with the long legs coming." Marie was a fierce lady whom many loved and respected. In her twenties, she moved to New York where she lived and raised her daughter, "Verne." During these years, she worked in factories and as a domesticated worker until she started working at New York Telephone Company.

Marie moved back to Smoaks to help take care of her father in his last years. She was a dedicated daughter, who loved her daddy. Anyone who knew her, knew the love that she had for her family. She retired as an Operator from AT&T after twenty-two years but she didn't sit down for long, in addition,  she worked as a DSS Driver for some years.

She was a devoted member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church who loved the Lord, departing her life as "Mother of the Church." She loved to travel, often taking trips to visit her family in New York. Gardening was her passion and she often stood proud when family would say " you have the best pear tree." Her two granddaughters kept her busy when they would visit for the summers. They always thought of "Grandma's house" as their second home.

Marie, also known as "Ma, Grandma, Aunt Marie, and Auntie" was a loving, caring and giving woman. She could be tough also, but it was always tough love, when she spoke, you listened. Her smile could brighten up anyone's day. Her spirit was magnetic. When she sang, she sang from the heart. Her favorite song was "Climbing Jacob's Ladder." In the Oaks of Orangeburg, where she spent her last two years, the staff would come to get her to join the service and to hear her sing. Even in her last days, she could be heard over everyone while singing.

Our family is thankful and grateful to have known and loved Marie for eighty-seven years. Take your rest now, for you have earned it. We loved you but God loved you best.

She was preceded in death by her father, Timothy Jordan, Sr. and mother, Ada Grimes Jordan; two husbands, Lee Frank Kirkland and Dan Ray Hutson; sisters, Colean Butler, Lougenia Butler, Delores Brown, Essie Brunson, Lillie Hodges, Christine Sinkler, Elma Jordan and Jeanette Jordan; brothers, Willis Evan, Sonny Boy Jordan, Randolph Jordan, Timothy Jordan, Jr. and Larry Jordan.
