Mother Mary Lou Drain Stokes was born on August 20, 1932 in Colleton County, the oldest child to the late Mr. Joe and Mrs. Lula Drain of Smoaks, South Carolina. After a decline in health, Mother Stokes became a resident of Pruitt Health in Walterboro, South Carolina. She entered into a peaceful rest on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Pruitt Health Center. Home-Going celebration will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, 3455 Sunrise Road, Smoaks, South Carolina. Reverend Samuel Hanney, Pastor and Eulogist. Interment, Old Miss Cemetery, Smoaks, South Carolina. A public viewing will be held Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Stephens-Maree-Tracy Chapel of Serenity from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
Mother Stokes attended the public schools in Colleton County. At an early age, she joined Greater Mt. Olive A.M.E. where she accepted Christ as her personal Savior. While on her walk with Christ, Mother stokes served as Mother of the church, a faithful usher, as well as serving on other auxiliaries.
In 1950, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mr. Mayfield Stokes of Dorchester, South Carolina.
She loved her past-time hobbies of afternoon car rides, talking on the phone and watching game shows.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Mother Stokes was preceded in death by her two daughters and son, Louvenia Stokes, Magaline Drain and James Stokes; two sisters, Queenie Stokes and Jessie Cochran and one brother, Joseph Drain.
She leaves her love and fond memories to her son Mr. Joseph Stokes (Yolanda) of Newberry, SC; three daughters, Ms. Beverly Blocker of Hinesville, GA, Ms. Mariera Turner (Leroy) of Walterboro, SC, and Ms. Angela Stokes of Smoaks, SC; eighteen grandchildren, four which she raised in the home, Angela Fishburne (Joseph), Fredrick Stokes, Tiffany Stokes, and Te'Angelia Stokes; thirty-five great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; one sister, Ms. Bennie L. Green (Louis) of Smoaks, SC; one aunt, Frances Jenkins of Smoaks, SC; a son-in-law, Thomas Lee Drain, Smoaks, SC; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
