Robert Ackerman was born on May 5, 1926, in Ruffin South Carolina; the third oldest of thirteen children born to the late Franklin Leroy and Fannie Ackerman. He received his formal education in the public schools of Colleton County and at a very young age, Robert followed the path laid out by his parents and united with the Hickory Hill United Methodist Church.
Robert served numerous years in the US Navy, receiving the “Good Conduct Award for Fidelity, Zeal & Obedience”, among others. While stationed in Portsmouth, Virginia he became the proud father of a son, Roger Lee Hamilton. In 1944, Robert was stationed at the US Naval Receiving Station in Boston, Massachusetts, where he met and married Beatrice Slaughter. They were happily married for forty-five years until her transition on November 21, 2000.
After proudly serving his country, Robert sought employment with the US Postal Service from May 4, 1971, until he retired. Going back to his Christian roots, Robert heard the voice of the Lord and joined the Morning Star Baptist Church; later being baptized on April 6, 2003.
Robert had a love for fashion and dancing. He would always step out in his nice suit, matching Fedora, shoes, and his Red Cadillac. The jewelry can’t be forgotten because he would never leave home without it. Keeping with the family tradition, he looked forward to attending “Big Meeting” at Hickory Hill United Methodist Church annually.
On December 9, 2023, God called his son, Robert Ackerman, from earth to Glory. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Ackerman; brothers, Fruitin, Riddic, Johnny, Frank, Carl, and Thomas and his sisters, Jaqueline, Mary, Daisy and Miriam.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his last sister, Shirley Brown, his last brother, Oscar (Sharleen) Ackerman; two great—granddaughters Jamey and Jemaine Reid; three who was always there when he called, nephews Tommy Ackerman & James Dowling, Jr., and Niece Essence Maston, along with a multitude of other family members, extended family members both near and far.
