Willie Hodges was born to Eliza Hodges Grant in Colleton County, June 20, 1952. Willie was reared by Charles and Essie Hodges Salley, Walterboro, South Carolina. Willie graduated from the public schools in Colleton County. He graduated in 1970 from Ruffin High School.
After graduating from high school, Willie worked in several places for employment including Asten-Hill and New York Wire as a calendar operator. Willie was also employed by Salley Concrete Finishing in Walterboro as a cement finisher.
Willie had a great love for the Pittsburgh Steelers and for cooking. He had a love for cooking yams, fried fish, fried turkey, and making homemade pudding and sausage. In making the homemade pudding and sausage, he would often use the family recipes he acquired from Essie Hodges Salley.
Willie joined Springtown United Methodist Church, Smoaks, South Carolina, at an early age faithfully participating in the ministries by his prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. He served faithfully as an usher and a Crusade choir member for many years. As a servant of God, Willie accepted Jesus Christ as Lord of his life.
Willie had an immense love for his family and friends. Over the years, he demonstrated the premise, “If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody with a word or a song, then my living will not be in vain.” This premise became evident as he reached out to love family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances.”
December 14, 1974, in Cottageville, South Carolina, Willie married the sweetheart of his life, Betty Eizabeth Washington Hodges and to this union, three children were born: Monica Selma Hodges (preceded him in death, 1985); William Hodges and Orlando James Hodges.
