Jessie M. Bennett-Stephens entered into this world on May 13, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Lawrence Bennett and Mamie Thompson-Bennett. She was the first born of her twin. She was called home on June 19, 2023 at her residence in Williams, South Carolina.
She was educated in the Colleton County School District. At an early age, she joined Evergreen Baptist Church where she remained faithful until her health failed. She served as a secretary at the church for several years and a member of the church choir.
She was first employed at JP Stevens for several years. After leaving JP Stevens, she worked at Dayco for many years. She also worked as a Caregiver, sitting with patients, for a short time.
On November 21, 1958, she married John Edward Stephens. Into this union, four children were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Mamie Bennett; husband, John Edward Stephens; four brothers, Wendell, Wash, Johnnie and Ben Bennett; three sisters, Gladys, Carrie, and her twin, Tessie; one great-grandson, Yaeger Mateo and a special niece, Mary.
She leaves to cherish her memories three sons, Hosea Stephens of Williams, South Carolina, Col. Bruce (Maria) Stephens of San Diego, California, and John Edward Stephens, III of Columbia, South Carolina; one daughter, Jackie Stephens of Williams, South Carolina; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Lou Etta (Bennie) Davis of Charleston, South Carolina; one great uncle, Johnny (Thelma) Thompson of Walterboro, South Carolina; a special daughter, Veronica W. Lingard; two great grand Godsons, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
