Ms. Mary Young Prothro

Mary Young Prothro was born February 5, 1953, in Sumter, South Carolina to the late James and Mary Young. Mary peacefully entered into eternal rest August 9, 2024, at Prima Health Heart Hospital. 

Mary graduated from Mayewood High School in 1971 at the top of her class. After graduation, Mary later worked for Sumter School District #17 for about 33 years in the cafeteria until she had her stroke in 2010. She was known for “the best cinnamon rolls” at Sumter High School. She also worked at Milwood Elementary School. 

Mary attended Household of Faith Church in Sumter, South Carolina since around 1973 under the leadership of Apostle Dr. Emerald and Elder Reginald Glover. Mary was a dedicated and faithful member of the church.  Mary loved the Lord and music. She was the founder and director of the group called, “Joyful Noize.” During her time, she liked to travel, shop, and spend time with her daughter and son- in -law.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Young; her brother, James “Ricky” Young, and her close nephew, Terrance Avery Prothro.

Mary leaves to cherish her memories, a loving daughter Melissa (McKenzie) Johnson of Conway, South Carolina; her only sister, Sarah “Dale” Crowder; her close sister - in - law, Sadie Young; her close nephews, Jamie (Temeka) and Michael (Kamisha) Young; her close nieces, Danyelle, Makayla, and Moriah Crowder all of Sumter, South Carolina, and a host of other relatives and friends.
