Nathan Stokes, Jr., the son of the late Nathan Stokes, Sr. and Rosa Mae Jenkins Stokes, was born on January 3, 1945 in Smoaks, South Carolina. On Sunday, October 31, 2021, due to extended illness, he entered into eternal rest at Allied Hospice Services in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
He was educated in the public schools of Colleton County. At an early age, he became a member of Lovely Hill Baptist Church and was a faithful member until he moved back to New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Nathan was employed with the New York Housing Authority and later with Main and Steel in Union, New Jersey.
At an early age, he joined in Holy Matrimony to ParLee Williams, and from this union, one child was born. Later in years, he met and married Gertrude Lawton. From this union, one daughter was born.
His hobbies were fishing and working on cars, dancing and singing.
Nathan was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Lawton Stokes; two brothers, Eddie Stokes and Freddie Marshall Stokes; two sisters, Rosa Lee Stokes and Little Sister Stokes; one step-daughter, Charell Lawton.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his children, a loving and devoted daughter, who took care of him until his last breath, Sheeneka E. Stokes (Reginald) Brailoford of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and Shindy Stokes Maxwell (Arthur) of Miami, Florida; three step-daughters, Cynthia Jackson (Ray) of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Gwendolyn Lawton of Newark, New Jersey and Angel (Shawn) Kingsberry of Irvington, New Jersey; one Godson, Al Burt; one step-son, Joseph Lawton; one adopted son, Terry Collins; six grandchildren, Aaron T. Maxwell, Alyson J'lyn Hogon of Miami, Florida, Zokwymere A. Lawton (Gia) of East Orange, New Jersey, Zy'onkwanazia T. Smith, Zy'onjadezia Z. Brown, Zy'odky-iir A. Brailoford of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; one great-granddaughter, Ya'Zarrah A. Adams (Mommie); ten step-grandchildren; one brother, Mckinley Stokes of Smoaks, South Carolina; three sisters-in-law, Rosa Lawton of Walterboro, South Carolina, Pastor Helen Douglas and Margie Lawton of Islandton, South Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
