Peggy Angelica Necole Bowman Mitchell, a shining star in the lives of everyone she touched, was born on July 5, 1970, to the late Pearlie Mae Gadson Bowman and Jackie Marshall Bowman, Sr. On February 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Colleton Medical Center, Peggy returned to her heavenly home, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion.
From a young age, Peggy's heart belonged to the Lord. She became a member of Greater Faith Revival Center at just twelve years old, under the guidance of the late Bishop Andy Ferguson, Sr. and Mother Rosa Ferguson. Her faith journey continued as an honorary member of Starlight Gospel Mission, where she was nurtured by the late Pastor Rosalee Mitchell and Elder Leon Mitchell, and later by Pastor Janice T. Mitchell. Peggy's spiritual path also led her to become a member of Soul Saving Refuge Center under Pastor Eunice Williams.
Peggy's love for learning and growth was evident in her academic pursuits. She graduated from Walterboro High School Class of 1988 and went on to attend USC Salkehatchie, graduating in 1996. Her academic achievements were marked by her inclusion on the National Dean's List in '96. Peggy's passion for education led her to earn a Master's Degree in Elementary education in 2001, followed by certification in special education.
As an educator, Peggy's heart overflowed with love and dedication for her students. She began her teaching career at Ivenia Brown Elementary in Green Pond, South Carolina, and later taught Special Education at Cottageville Elementary. Peggy's impact on the lives of her students and their families will be forever remembered.
On June 12, 1999, Peggy united with Perry L. Mitchell, Sr., in marriage, and their love became the foundation for a beautiful family. Two precious children, Perry L. Mitchell Jr. and Janei K. Mitchell, were born to this union.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Perry L. Mitchell Sr.; her parents, Jackie Marshall Bowman Sr. and Pearlie Mae Gadson Bowman; her Spiritual Parents, Bishop Andy Ferguson, Sr. and Mother Rosa Ferguson; her brother, Cedric Verner; her stepson, Aandre L. Geddis; her paternal grandparents, Johnny and Rosalee Bowman; and her maternal grandparents, Samuel Gadson and Inez Frazier Gadson.
Peggy's love, kindness, and generosity will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community. She leaves behind a treasure trove of memories for her two children, Perry L. Mitchell Jr. and Janei K. Mitchell; her honorary son, Ladraye Bowman, Sr. all of Walterboro South Carolina; her stepchildren, Quentin Geddis of Clubhouse, South Carolina, Latiesha Geddis (Jeffrey) Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and Ricardo Mitchell of Bowman, South Carolina; her granddog-daughter, Diamond Mitchell; her sisters, Berniece (Darlene) Bowman, Juanita (Tammy) Harvey, and Audrey Polite (Ralph) all of Walterboro, South Carolina; her brothers, Jackie Bowman Jr. of Warner Robbins, Georgia, Tommy (Johnny) Bowman of Walterboro, South Carolina, Nathaniel McKelvey (Valerie) of Camden, South Carolina, Corey Bowman of Walterboro, South Carolina, and Maurice Bowman of Columbia, South Carolina; and her god-siblings Andy Ferguson Jr. (Christal), Vernice Crumwell, Kenneth Ferguson (Loretta); Carolyn Snipes (Vernon), Vincent Ferguson (Annalee), Jacqueline Ferguson and Emily Williams (Jerome); Special Mentor, Mother Ruth J. Ruger of Jacksonboro, South Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Though Peggy's time on this earth has come to an end, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew her. Her love, kindness, and generosity will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of her loved ones.In the words of those who loved her, Peggy was a kind and gentle soul, always willing to lend a helping hand. Her heart was full of love, and her spirit was full of light. She will be deeply missed, but her love and legacy will never be forgotten.
