Mrs. Ruth Stevens, 93, was born on September 28, 1929 in Walterboro, South Carolina. Ruth was the eldest of three daughters born from the Union of the late Reather and Henry Salley. On Saturday, October 15, 2022. Ruth slipped away, with her daughter, Ernestine by her side.
Ruth attended the public schools of Colleton County. Her faith in God was unwavering. Ruth accepted the Lord as her savior early in her life and joined Springtown United Methodist Church. She later migrated to Brooklyn, New York. There she met and married the love of her life, Klein Stevens. From this union was born their daughter, Ernestine.
Ruth was a faithful and loyal member of St. John Baptist Church of Brooklyn. She served on many committees at the church including the Pastor's Aide Committee and the Usher Board. Ruth also served as a member of the Eastern Star of Bethlehem Grand Chapter under the jurisdiction of Enoch Grand Lodge. During her livelihood, Ruth devoted many years working in the health field.
After more than 60 years living in Brooklyn, Ruth retired and returned to Walterboro. Through the years in New York, Ruth supported and fellowshipped often at her hometown church, Springtown United Methodist Church. Once retired, Ruth became more active and hands on at Springtown. Ruth loved serving her God.
Ruth loved her grandson, Christopher known to the family as Chris. He was the JOY OF HER LIFE. Ruth was heartbroken when Chris passed in December, 2012.
Ruth had a passion for cooking and enjoyed sharing her culinary skills with family and friends. She was a generous and loving person who greatly enjoyed life. To walk alongside Ruth was like running in a marathon. She had a speedy walk and a hearty laugh, sometimes described as cackling. Ruth was very wise and a bright light to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reather and Henry Salley; her husband, Klein Stevens; a grandson, Chris; and two brothers-in-law, Hoover and Richard.
Ruth leaves a rich heritage to her daughter Ernestine, great granddaughter Chrisianna, her sisters Estelle Salley and Clinez Salley, several nieces, nephews, colleagues and friends. We are all going to miss you. You were the best mother and friend anyone could ask for.
Mom, I look forward to that great resurrection hope that God extends to all who serve him. I will be there with open arms to greet You, Dad, and Chris again!
