Virginia Henderson was the second child born to the late Mrs. Julia Mae Williams- Edwards and Mr. Dave Edwards. She was born on June 8, 1937 in Colleton County, South Carolina. She passed away peacefully at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro, South Carolina on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Virginia was raised in Walterboro, where she attended school as a young girl. At a young age she met a handsome young man from Springtown, by the name of Ralp Henderson who swept her off of her feet. They later married and to this union one daughter, Patricia was born. In search of a better life and greater opportunities, Ralph and Virginia relocated to the Big Apple,New York City. Upon arriving in New York Virginia settled into Brownsville Brooklyn where she landed several jobs, her most memorable was at the chunky candy factory where she met and made lifelong friends. While living in Brownsville an opportunity arose for her to move into a brand new development located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Cooper Park Houses. This move would forever change the trajectory of her life.
Cooper Park is where Miss. Virginia would reside for the next 30 years or so. She became a staple in her community. She ventured out and launched her “unofficial” daycare. Everybody wanted Miss. Virginia to babysit their children while they worked. She went above and beyond to take care of everyone’s children as if they were her own. Truth be told she single handedly raised an entire community as their parents’ worked day in and day out. She was loved and respected by many because of the love she had for their children. She never turned anyone away, whether you had the money to pay for her services or not.
Later in life she took on the responsibility of raising her cousin’schildren; Shaquan, Richard, Lovelle, and Kareen who she later adopted. A woman with a heart larger than life, always had an open door and a extra plate of food for anyone who was in need. Speaking of food, she was one of the absolute greatest cooks known to man. Whether it was a pot of greens, a bowl of potato salad, or her delicious candy yams she didn’t mind feeding you. After residing in Brooklyn for more than 30 years, she desired to give her children a better life, one they had never experienced before. Good old fashioned country living. She relocated back to Williams, South Carolina where she attended the Evergreen Baptist Church, and worshipped there faithfully until her health prevented her.
A virtuous woman indeed, who exemplified love and taught her children and grandchildren the value of real love. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you was her mantra.
She was predeceased by her parents Julia Mae Williams Edwards, and Dave Edwards and her brother: Jethro Edwards
